Changing Your Computer's Nickname

Summary:

Each Carbonite installation has a nickname, which is intended to help you more easily distinguish between the computers on your account. This can be updated through various methods, depending on your subscription and the version of Carbonite installed.

This article applies to:

Carbonite Plans Products Platforms
Basic, Plus, Prime, Core, Power, and Ultimate (Not sure?) Safe and Safe Pro (Not sure?) Windows and Mac

Solution:

Nicknames function a bit differently depending on your operating system and Carbonite plan.

Windows

In Carbonite for Windows, you will enter a nickname during the initial Carbonite installation.

Mac

In Carbonite for Mac, the nickname is determined from the computer's .local name (set under the Sharing section in System Preferences).

* - When Carbonite is transferred to a new Mac (or uninstalled and reinstalled to the same Mac), it will automatically change the nickname to the current .local name of the computer it was installed to.

How to Perform Each Method

Changing Your Nickname in Your Carbonite Account (Carbonite Safe only)

If you have a Carbonite Safe subscription, you can change your computer's Carbonite nickname from within your account page.

If you have a Carbonite Safe Backup Pro subscription, you'll need to change your computer's nickname through the Carbonite application.

First, click the button below to sign into your Carbonite account.

Sign In

Once logged in, select Edit next to the computer's nickname you wish to change

Enter the desired nickname within the field that appears. Click Save in order to save your changes.

The Carbonite software will update to reflect the new nickname within the next hour or upon your next reboot.

Changing Your Nickname in the Carbonite Application (Windows only)

For Carbonite for Windows, you can change your computer's Carbonite nickname through the Carbonite application.

Double-click the Carbonite icon in your Windows notification area The area next to your system clock that contains the icons of the programs you are running. to open the Carbonite application.

Note: If the icon isn't visible, click the show hidden icons button ( < ) next to the Windows notification area to display hidden icons. In Windows 7, click the Show hidden icons button ( ^ ) next to the Windows notification area to display the Carbonite icon. To view the desktop and notification area in Windows 8 and Windows 10, press the Windows Key + D on your keyboard.

Within the Carbonite application, click the My account link to view your computer nickname.

Click Edit next to your computer nickname.

Type a suitable nickname for your computer in the appropriate field.

Click Save to save your changes. Your account should update within an hour.

Having Trouble? Try changing your nickname again. This time, click Save and then click on another section of the Carbonite Application, like Status or Help before closing out the window.
