Backing Up Microsoft Outlook 2007 Data and Below

  • This article is for Windows only

Microsoft Outlook 2007 stores your email data files in different locations depending on your operating system. If the type of email uses a POP protocol, the .PST file will exist locally on your computer, where Carbonite will be able to select it for backup. Please choose your Operating System.

The sections below are collapsed. Please click a section title to open / close the appropriate section.

Windows Vista/7

In Windows Vista and Windows 7, Microsoft Outlook data files are stored in the following location:

  • C:\Users\{your_user_name}\App Data\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\

To find them, click the Windows Start button and click Computer to open your Windows Explorer.

Select Start and My Computer

Double-click the C: Drive and navigate to C:\Users\{your_user_name}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\.

Double-click the C drive

Note: {your_user_name} will vary. If you do not see your own name, your files are most likely in a generically-named folder, such as Owner or User.

By default, some of the folders within the folder structure where your email files are located are hidden by Windows. If you do not see certain folders, you can unhide them.

Microsoft stores your emails as a .PST file. If you see that the file already have colored dots on their icons, Carbonite is already set up to include your email files in your backup. If the files do not have colored dots, right-click each file and select Carbonite; Back this up.

Notes about email backup:

Carbonite does not backup email through an IMAP protocol. These emails are hosted and managed by an email provider which Carbonite does not have access to for back up.

Carbonite does not backup .OST or .NST files from Microsoft Outlook. These are offline files in Outlook that are stored on your computer in reference to the actual mailbox database which is stored on a separate Microsoft Exchange server. If the email you would like to back up is a part of your company domain, Carbonite Server Backup can back up this database only from the Exchange Server itself. Carbonite Server Backup is available under our Carbonite Office Power and Ultimate plans.

Windows 8 / 10

In Windows 8 and Windows 10, Microsoft Outlook data files are stored in the following location:

  • C:\Users\{your_user_name}\App Data\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\

On Windows 8 and Windows 10, click the File Explorer icon in the Taskbar on your Desktop (if you are not already on your Desktop, press the Windows Key + D to access the Desktop).

Double-click the C: Drive and navigate to C:\Users\{your_user_name}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\.
