Updates to macOS Catalina File Locations (Mac 2x)

With the recent release of macOS 10.15 Catalina, Apple created a new volume to separate the system files from the user files. The two volumes, “Macintosh HD" and “Macintosh HD - Data", are seamlessly merged by Finder to appear as a single volume.

After updating to macOS Catalina, Apple moves the Mac user files from “Macintosh HD” into the new “Macintosh HD – Data” volume, but the files appear to be in the original location in Finder. As a result, you will see “Macintosh HD – Data” within the My Files section of the Carbonite interface, but the Carbonite backup will remain unaffected.

Launch Apple Mail

Refer to the table below for more information about each volume.

VolumeBefore macOS Catalina (10.14 and earlier)With macOS 10.15 Catalina
Macintosh HDThis volume was previously used to store Mac user data, which Carbonite backed up.The data from this volume was moved to Macintosh HD – Data.
Macintosh HD - DataThis volume did not exist. This volume contains Mac user data, which Carbonite continues to backup and the backup remains unaffected.
Within Finder, this location will be labeled as “Macintosh HD”, but Disk Utility shows that the true location is “Macintosh HD – Data,” which is why it appears in the Carbonite interface under My Drives.
