Backing Up Microsoft Outlook 2010 and Above

Microsoft Outlook 2010 and above stores a local copy of your email, contacts, and calendar on your computer. By default, Carbonite automatically backs up the .PST in the default file location so you can restore your information if you ever it.

Please follow this guide to determine the location of your .PST file and ensure that it is selected for backup.

Finding the Outlook file

Microsoft Outlook stores your emails in either a .OST or .PST file on your computer. For backup purposes, the .PST file can be backed up and restored by Carbonite to restore your emails.

Outlook automatically creates .PST files for POP3 accounts that Carbonite can back up. In Outlook 2016 and 365, IMAP accounts use .OST files, which cannot be used to restore emails because .OST files do not contain all the information needed to restore the data. If you wish to back up IMAP accounts, you can export a .PST file for Carbonite to backup.

The locations below are the default locations for the Outlook files depending on your version of Windows.

If you configured Outlook to store data in a custom location, you can determine the location of the .PST file through the Outlook program.

Backing up the .PST File with Carbonite

After finding the .PST file, you can navigate to the file in Windows File Explorer and select it for backup by Carbonite.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to default or custom location of the file.
  3. Right-click on the .PST file and select Carbonite.

The drop-down menu determines whether the File backed up or if the file was not selected for backup.

Carbonite Safe Client: Right-click Carbonite to determine whether the file backed up and when it was last backed up.
