Internet Service Providers with Bandwidth Restrictions
- This article is for Windows only
A cost consideration for some users may be excess bandwidth charges from Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Satellite and wireless broadband providers may set limits on the amount of data that can be uploaded and/or downloaded each month, and may assess surcharges for exceeding that limit. Standard wired broadband providers are also considering surcharges for "excessive" use of bandwidth. The amount of data you wish to back up (or restore) should be considered if you have this type of arrangement with an ISP.
Please refer to your ISP's terms of service, or contact their customer service department for disclosure of any additional usage charges they may assess.
If you do find yourself in this situation, you can take steps to limit the amount of bandwidth you are using with Carbonite. You can choose to do a manual backup and only select your most important files first or you can deselect files you do not need backed up right away. You can also enter low priority mode on Windows. This will cause Carbonite to send smaller packets of data, which will use less of your bandwidth.
Alternatively, if your ISP lets you upload an unlimited amount at a certain time of day, you can also schedule your backup accordingly.
